Posted by Rya on Aug 31, 2011

The Catalina Eco Marathon will start and finish in the town of Avalon. Run through three entirely different eco-systems and see the plant life and animal life in each.

We welcome you, the athlete, to one of the most beautiful marathons that you will ever run in the United States. The Catalina Eco Marathon will start and finish in the town of Avalon, no morning boats to catch, no seas to worry about, just a leisurely stroll to the start line and back into town after 26.2 miles of some of the most beautiful, rugged and breathtaking trails you will experience.

During the course of the marathon, you will traverse single track trails, ridgelines, and vistas that will afford views of the Pacific Ocean – from BOTH sides of the island. You will run through three entirely different eco-systems and see the plant life and animal life in each. Don't be surprised to see buffalo on the course, seals in the water, and bald eagles overhead.

Santa Catalina Island has been immortalized on the silver screen hundreds of times. Filming on the island introduced several of Hollywood’s biggest stars to the charms of Catalina. Many celebrities worked and played on the island and often remarked that Catalina was for them an excellent getaway from Hollywood. The Catalina Island Museum’s extensive collection of photographs, which document many classic productions being filmed on the island and unique snapshots of celebrities enjoying Catalina over the years, will be features in this special exhibition.

Catalina served as the location for the most terrifying scenes from the movie Jaws and has hosted Errol Flynn, Charlie Chaplin and his wife Paulette Goddard, Cecil B. De Mille, Mickey Rooney, Johnny Weismuller, John Wayne, Clark Gable and many more over the years.

Born to an emotionally unstable mother, uncertain of her father’s identity and shuffled off to live in the homes of relatives, an orphanage and a succession of foster homes, the early life of Norma Jeane Baker is hardly the background expected of one of the screen’s most enduring legends. “Before She Was Marilyn” represents the first major exhibition documenting the early life of Marilyn Monroe, and exhibits for the first time photographs from not only the Catalina Island Museum’s own archive but from archives throughout the U.S.  Candid and often disturbing, the exhibition examines in detail the year Norma Jeane spent on Catalina Island.
